McLane's Childrens Hospital DonationThe Temple South Rotary presented a check for $10,000 to McLane's Children's Hospital for purchase of a respirator for the Critical Care Transport Unit. The check was received by Dr. John Boyd, CEO of Scott & White Hospital and Ellen Hansen, COO, CNO of McLane's Children's Hospital. The device replaced a more outdated, cumbersome unit and is greatly appreciated by the medical personnel that will be using it. The funds were raised during a Casino Royale event held on January 12,2013 in which live and silent auctions along with casino events were entertaining. Local sponsorships from businesses and Rotarians added to the success of this fundraiser. |
Flag Project 2013Temple South Rotary has started another year of Flag installations for the Temple area. Bill Jones, Flag Chairman for this year has 13 teams putting flags out each holiday. We have already displayed flags for Memorial day and Flag Day. The flags are displayed 5 times during the season and the 4th of July, Patriots Day and Veterans Day remain. This is the 15th year of the Flag Project and it was started during Sandy Meyer's Presidency and she was the driving force behind its initiation. We display between 350 to 400 flags each Flag Display Day. Not all areas in Temple are displayed, as much as we would like to display them all over the city we physically can't. If you know someone who would like a flag placed in their yard on those dates let Bill Jones know. The cost is $40 per year and even though it is almost half way through the year, we prorate the cost. The flags are sold on a subscription basis to individual homeowners in selected neighborhoods. Each subscriber has a steel sleeve driven in to the ground next to the curb in front of their home. The curb is marked to assist in locating the sleeve during flag placement. The flags are picked up prior to sundown each flag display day. We always need help placing flags, especially on traditional federal holidays so let Bill Jones or Doug Smith know.

Successful Temple Color Up 5KTemple South Rotary assisted in running the Color Up 5k event on June 29th at Temple Lions Park. We had approximately seventeen Temple South Rotaries plus spouses and or relatives assist. There were approximately 1600 participants in the event which made in the neighborhood of $8000 for our club. Thanks to all who helped and congratulations to Neil and Nancy for lining up this event. The Temple Color Up 5K is our club's project to raise funds for a walk-in freezer for Churches Touching Lives for Christ food pantry. This Ministry is commonly called CTLC and provides for the needy in the Temple Coummunity. The freezer will allow CTLC to provide more weekend snack packs to kids at TISD who are on reduced price or free lunch program. The Snack program has been able to provide 100 such students with these snack packs, but 600 more are needed. |
Installation Banquet for 2013-14The Installation Banquet for the upcoming Rotary year 2013-14 was held at the 93 West Restaurant on Saturday June 22nd. Incoming District Governor Rich Kaye was on hand to install a new slate of officers for 2013. The new slate of officers are the following: Nancy Glover, Pres.; Karen Hawley, Pres. Elect; Cindy Zavodny, Vice Pres.; Mike Brockway, Treas.; Mark Fihn, Sec.; Neil Coker, Immed. Past Pres.; Tom Gerik, Club Adm. Chr.; Don Stiles, Memb. Chr.: Beverly Luedke, Club Serv. Chr.; Shanna Grote, Pub. Rel./ Comm. Chr.; Bryan Denman, New Gen. Chr.; Doug Smith, Found. Chr.; and last but not least Alan Kirton as Sargent of Arms. The traditions of the past were performed as usual with Neil Coker being awarded the coveted PPOTS (Past President of Temple South) and Nancy Glover POTS (President of Temple South). In Neil's case the pontificating was a long drawn out affair, signifying that much was accomplished during Pres. Neil's year. Great job Neil, great year! Good luck and good fortune Nancy! The gavel was passed, I mean the knife was passed since the gavel wasn't there. Every one had a great time and then everyone went home! Happy, especially Neil!

Fifth Monday Social August 28
A long standing tradition of the Rotary Club of Temple-South continues on August 28, at the Cyclone Corral. Temple-South has always canceled the noon meeting on the fifith Monday of a month to arrange a special activity. These have ranged from Yankee Night, where large amounts of lobster were consumed. Not to be outdone, the cajuns of our club brought in delicacies from East of the Sabine River. We have been to many restaurants and homes throughout the years.
August 28 will be a repeat of a popular gathering at the Cyclone Corral in Cyclone, TX about 25 minutes to the east of Temple. Monday is the sign up at the Rotary meeting, or you can sign up on- line. It will be a time of good food and great fellowship. The Rotary Club of Temple Sunrise will be joining us for some interclub friendship.
We hope to see you there.
